HBO reveals a few brief scenes from 'Game of Thrones' Season 5

HBO has been running a Twitter promotion for Season 5 of "Game of Thrones," sending out very brief video updates, called "visions," to those who sign up to receive them on the Three Eyed Raven website. These updates came as direct messages on Twitter, and HBO sent out the final one to participating Twitter accounts on Thursday and posted the footage to its "Game of Thrones" YouTube channel on Friday.

Unlike the other "visions" HBO has sent, which largely featured clips from Season 4 with an image or two from Season 5, this week's clips are entirely new, and give a bit of insight as to things that may happen in the show's next season.

In the first one, Jon Snow talks with Mance Rayder about Mance's true reasons for bringing the 90 wildling clans together in an attempt to break south of The Wall. As Winter is Coming notes, this is likely one of the first exchanges between Snow and Rayder after the wildling's defeat, and shows a somewhat heated conversation between the two men.

The second clip shows a weary Brienne of Tarth telling her traveling companion Podrick Payne that she doesn't want anybody following her, as she isn't a leader. She reveals that all she ever wanted was to fight for a lord she believed in, but laments that all the good lords are dead and the rest are monsters. The exchange shows that Brienne is growing tired of her mission, and is beginning to doubt what she's doing.

Both clips show that frustration is mounting in Westeros and Essos, which suggests that Season 5 could be pretty dark and grim for our favorite characters. That seems to be in line with recent comments by George R.R. Martin, author of the "A Song of Ice and Fire" heptalogy the show is based on. Martin stated this season will be the bloodiest yet.

Season 5 of "Game of Thrones" debuts on April 12 on HBO. Brace yourselves.
