Adam West and Burt Ward team up for new 'Batman' animated film

The original Batman and Robin will team up once more for an animated film featuring the Caped Crusader and Boy Wonder.

Actors Adam West and Burt Ward -- who played the dynamic duo in the campy '60s TV series "Batman" -- announced on a panel this week at the North Carolina fan convention Mad Monster Party that they would be lending their voices to the cartoon.

"You can look forward to a new animated Batman full-length 90 minute feature coming out on the 50th anniversary," Ward said during the panel, a video of which you can see embedded below. "One of possibly two, but for sure one, that Adam and I are going to be doing the voices for."

The anniversary Ward refers to is the original "Batman" TV series, which ran from 1966 to 1968, with West as the eponymous detective and Ward as his plucky young sidekick. The duo kept Gotham safe week after week from the likes of the Penguin (Burgess Meredith), the Joker (Cesar Romero) and Catwoman (played by an array of actresses such as Julie Newmar and Eartha Kitt).

Last year, Warner Bros. Entertainment released "Batman: The Complete TV Series" on DVD and Blu-ray. Previously, only the 1966 feature film was available from 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment.

DC Comics also paid tribute to the classic TV show in 2013 by releasing a special line of digital comics called "DC2," in which the "Batman '66" title featured the likenesses of West and Ward fighting their old foes.

This is great news for "Batman" fans hoping the two actors would team up again to BOFF! and SOCK! comic book criminals. Though this isn't the first time West and Ward lent their voices to animated Batman TV series and specials -- they previously appeared in "The New Adventures of Batman" and "Legends of the Superheroes."

Ironically, West has also voiced DC Comics characters other than the Caped Crusader in "Batman: The Animated Series," "Batman: The Brave and the Bold" and "The Batman."

Tune in soon -- same Bat-time, same Bat-channel -- here on CNET for more news about the upcoming animated feature.
